Wouter van den Bos @ Hot Politics Lab

December 13 @ 3:00 pm 4:00 pm

In this session of Hot Politics Lab, Wouter van den Bos (University of Amsterdam) will give a talk titled “Social Learning in Social (Media) Network Science”.

Talk Abstract:
Adolescence is a time of social re-orientation in which peers become important sources of information and support. During this stage of life social information is useful to navigate the uncertain and novel environments on the way to adulthood. Yet not all information is equally valuable, specifically in on-line environments, so it is an important skill to weigh information accordingly.
Besides information, social networks provide social support and social feedback, which may further guide behavior and attitudes. Positive social feedback, such as likes, may specifically be a strong motivator for adolescents.
I will present a computational framework and several empirical studies on how adolescents learn how to adaptively use social information stemming from different sources in their social networks. In addition, I will present three studies on feedback sensitivity and social media use in youth, lining it to social media engagement and mood.

The talk will be followed by Q&A, and everyone is welcome to join in the Common Room (Roeterseilandcampus Room B9.22) and online through this link.
